Custom Laptop Stand
This project involved designing and fabricating a custom plywood laptop stand, crafted entirely in a woodshop using precision woodworking techniques. The design featured a striking diamond-patterned top, achieved through a multi-step process of cutting, gluing, and aligning plywood strips to highlight the unique end-grain pattern.
To ensure dimensional accuracy, I used a table saw with a stop block to cut uniform strips, followed by a miter saw to achieve consistent lengths. After carefully aligning and gluing the sections, I repeated this process to build up the final patterned surface. The stand’s legs were designed in CAD, printed to scale as templates, and cut using a bandsaw before refining the shape with a spindle sander. Alignment dowels were incorporated using a drill press to enhance structural integrity during assembly.
This project strengthened my skills in precision woodworking, CAD-based design, and methodical planning. By integrating traditional woodworking techniques with digital design tools, I ensured a high-quality final product with both functional and aesthetic appeal. The experience also reinforced the importance of careful material selection, order of operations, and meticulous craftsmanship—essential principles for engineering and product design.

Leg CAD model
The model and dimensions of the leg in mm used to print out a 1:1 scaled copy that was glued as a template

Wire frame Assembly
Wire frame view of the completed assembly created in SolidWorks used to decide on final dimensions before starting any cutting

Initial glue up
After all the strips of plywood were cut glue was applied and the pieces were staggered for the next step of the glue up
Completed assembly
All components were sanded to 180 grit to ensure a smooth and professional finished product
